“What a fucking idiot”: Michael Wolff’s sweary account of the Trump White House

Whoo-ee, 2018 started off with a fucking bang, didn’t it? Right on the heels of our third annual Tucker Awards for Excellence in Swearing drop the juicy profanities in Michael Wolff’s controversial Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.

As excerpts and early reviews ahead of its January 9th release are proving, Wolff’s account—apparently based on over 200 interviews with the president, his inner circle, and other staff conducted over 18 months, much as embedded in the West Wing—is blistering. Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon, of all people, called the Trump Tower meeting with Russians “treasonous,” according to Wolff.

Wolff’s account is also a very sweary one. As Ben Zimmer, who authors our reliably politics-packed Tucker Awards, observed on Twitter:

Zimmer’s right, so let’s highlight some choice examples we’ve seen so far. Bannon clearly positions himself as a Tucker favorite, if Wolff’s reports are confirmed.

Bannon, on the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians (emphasis mine):

Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad shit, and I happen to think it’s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately. (Guardian)

Bannon, on Trump senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner’s real estate dealings, which federal prosecutors have subpoenaed:

It goes through Deutsche Bank and all the Kushner shit. The Kushner shit is greasy. They’re going to go right through that. They’re going to roll those two guys up and say play me or trade me. (Guardian)

The late and former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes on Trump’s relationship to Putin:

Trump would jump through hoops for Murdoch…Like for Putin. Sucks up and shits down. I just worry about who’s jerking whose chain. (Quartz)

Bannon, on Putin’s feelings about Trump:

Mostly…he went to Russia and he thought he was going to meet Putin. But Putin couldn’t give a shit about him. So he’s kept trying. (New York magazine)

Bannon, on Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any links it may have had to the Trump campaign:

Their path to fucking Trump goes right through Paul Manafort, Don Jr. and Jared Kushner…It’s as plain as a hair on your face. (Guardian)

Wolff claims Bannon also called Trump’s daughter and advisor Ivanka Trump “a fucking liar,” and said, after the Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Accord,“Score. The bitch is dead.” Ivanka was an opponent of the withdrawal. (New Yorker)

And the kicker? Media mogul and current Fox News CEO Rupert Murdoch on Trump, after a conversation about his contradictory immigration policies (and echoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s own reported “fucking moron”):

What a fucking idiot. (Quartz)

Remember, we may be fuckers at Strong Language, but we always aim to do our due diligence: These quotes have only been reported by Wolff, each warranting verification.

Still, if any are true—and we do have reason to believe some are accurate—Wolff is dishing out some, well, damning shit. It seems 2018 is already shaping up to be a banner year for swearing. Happy Fucking New Year?!

UPDATE(S):

As Ben Zimmer (who else?) notes in the comments below, here are some additional notable profanities from Wolff’s piece on his new book for The Hollywood Reporter:

  • You can’t make this shit up“: Sean Spicer on having to defend Trump’s inaugural crowd sizes
  • Trump is “dumb as shit,” Wolff reports from Gary Cohn, Director of the National Economic Council
  • He’s just a fucking fool,” former campaign aide Sam Nunberg on Trump

We’ll continue updating the piece as additional swears come in.

For an Australian Murdoch is not very inventive with his wankery.
